Celebrating with Variety Show
as a Family
In a heartwarming celebration, nearly 800 students, parents, alumni and friends came back to commemorate our school’s 25 th anniversary Variety Show on 22 nd March 2025.

The event was a nostalgic journey back in time as our Dr. Herbert, our school’s Supervisor and Principal Law unveiled a time capsule sealed two decades ago. A treasure trove of historical artifacts emerged, offering a glimpse into the early days of our beloved school. Principal Law narrated to all of us the significance of each item, including the Bible which is the Word of God, guiding us with His Life all the way.

Among the cherished memorabilia were students and teachers’ group photos, 5 th anniversary school ties, AWESOME Almanac, a newspaper clipping spotlighting our school, headlined ‘Taking Shape” under the leadership of the esteemed Dr. Woo, the Principal at that time.

The audience was treated to an array of anecdotes, jokes, and photographs from some of our pioneering teachers, eliciting lots of laughter and fond memories!

Alumni’s presence and performance were marvelously captivating, ranging from Cantonese Opera snippet, Chinese Kung Fu to Karate demonstration. Parents’ encouraging remarks in the award-winning slogan sharing session uplifted spirits and fostered a sense of unity.

Live band music show staged by our alumni, students, teachers, and social workers rounded off the Variety Show beautifully. The atmosphere buzzed with joy and a strong sense of familial bond.

“Handprint legacy, 25 th anniversary” is the banner that everyone invited to leave their handprints on it. It would also be one of the items to be preserved in this year’s new time capsule - a testament to the enduring spirit of our school community. Nostalgic snacks from Lady Ching of our school’s tuck shop attracted a big crowd while exploring and taking photos in our school’s history gallery, different laboratories and function rooms.

Looking ahead, the future of our school shines bright as we continue to inspire students, parents, and teachers to shape tomorrow's success together. The Variety Show was not just a celebration of the past but a reaffirmation of the enduring spirit of joy and unity that defines Tak Sun Secondary School.

Tak Sun Boys - Christian Gentlemen with
a Global Outlook in Model United Nations

Tak Sun Boys Debating on International Issues

Five students - Jeff Chiu from 5W (5), Addison Ita-as from 5W (8) Alfred Leung from 4M (13), Ryan Poon from 4M (23) and Ronny Fung from 3P (11) had the opportunity to participate in the Model United Nations (MUN) Conference at ESF Renaissance College Hong Kong (RCHK) on 1 - 2 March 2025. This is the largest delegation that TSSS has sent to ESF RCHK as there were around 250 students from 22 schools participating in different committees during the weekend.

Burmese Civil War

Two boys debuted in the beginners' committee such as the General Assembly - where they discussed about private military contractors in international armed warfare and the impact of the Burmese Civil War on regional stability in South East Asia. The boys had a wonderful time and learnt a lot in the beginners committee.

Human Trafficking

Two students participated the intermediate committees such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) - where topics include recent developments and sustained threats in Nato’s European pillar and Nato’s role in counter-terrorism; and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) where the topics mentioned about human trafficking and public health impacts of drug decriminalisation. This requires more skillsets where students would need to understand the topic and bring out questions for others to answer to the topics concerned.

Syrian Civil War

One student debuted the advanced committee as the Security Council (SC) in which he would have to know the topic in detail and have to put the research findings, debate and collaborate for resolution papers at the end of the topic discussed. The topic that the SC discussed was the continuation of the Syrian Civil War - where students frequently asked questions and clarifications to solve matters in the discussion table.

A rare opportunity for our five boys as it was an eye-opening experience for them to be in different conferences and to collaborate with their counterparts from other schools, learn and understand from other students to improve themselves in the next Conference.

Parenting Case Studies
Detoxing Hook-up Culture

Detoxing Hook-Up Culture

Our school's steadfast commitment to the principle of "Families Come First" and parental education serves as a cornerstone of our unwavering support for both parents and students within a nurturing family environment that celebrates life.

On February 22nd, parents gathered at our school to express their concerns regarding their sons' personal development. Through engaging case studies, group discussions, and expert insights provided by The International Federation for Family Development (IFFD)*, couples delved deep into the complexities of their sons' future paths, particularly in the face of the rising influence of hook-up culture propagated by social media and popular culture.

Armed with expert guidance and bolstered by mutual support from fellow parents, husbands and wives explored strategies to detoxify this phenomenon and courageously address the pertinent issues at hand. This collaborative effort aims to align fathers and mothers to tackle the challenges posed by hook-up culture head-on and pave the way for a healthier, more informed approach to relationships for our youth.

The next Fathers’ Get-Together will be held on 10 th May, 2025. And the upcoming Case Studies for parents is scheduled on 17 th May 2025. We look forward to seeing you all.

Celebrating as a family in TSSS
25th Anniversary Poon Choi Feast!

Celebrating as a family in Tak Sun Secondary School’s 25 th Anniversary Poon Choi Feast!

Last Saturday, 15 th February 2025, our school had the privilege of commemorating a remarkable milestone - our 25th anniversary, with a feast that will forever remain happily in our memories. The atmosphere was filled with a familial warmth that enveloped us all, making the occasion even more memorable.

The event commenced with a reminiscence shared by our school supervisor, Dr. Peter Herbert. His welcome address took us to a nostalgic journey of the past 25 years, starting from the early days of our school without any air conditioners, highlighting the life-long ‘bond of friendships’between individual teachers and students all these years. His words reminded us of the challenge that we need to achieve is to “live as family”.

Our Principal Law reiterated our school's education philosophy, emphasizing St Josemaria’s teaching of virtues, character formation and especially the need to humble ourselves, ‘hide and disappear’, but to give all glory to God. His counting of blessings, intertwining our memories and the school’s development, giving credits to our predecessors, and his reaffirmation that our school nurtures ‘Christian gentlemen with a global outlook’ set the tone for the future, inspiring us to continue nurturing young minds with passion and dedication.

The day unfolded with a beautiful sunny day after one whole week of unstable, chilly and rainy weather. Starting from around 1 pm, well before our feast started, parents, alumni, students, teachers, staff and friends of Tak Sun filled over 32 tables spreading across our school’s sports grounds. The atmosphere was ‘familial and warm’, in the words of Principal Law, fostering a sense of togetherness of our school community.

Before the feast commenced, we said the grace before meal together with Father Billy Ng, our alumnus priest with his blessing of food.

Thanks to our school choir, joined with the choir of Our Lady’s College, whose songs resonated with all of the audience: Lux aternae and Earthrise, praising God and His magnificent creation. Thanks to the electrifying street dance performances by our talented alumnus, Mr. Louis Pong, and three current students, Lok, Moses and Mickey, that captivated the entire audience. Thanks to Mr. Ray Li, our Chinese Language Panel head, serenaded us with two beautiful pop songs, winning the hearts and standing ovation of the whole crowd.

As the day drew to a close, all teachers and staff, sang our school hymn, twice. Why twice? Principal Law took the opportunity to invite the alumni to come up to the stage and join us to sing for the second time. Right before we started to sing, Dr. Herbert told the teachers on the stage, “I did my part.” Yes, he is the one who wrote the lyrics.

Here's to the next 25 years of excellence, growth, and togetherness as we continue to write the story of our school ‘by offering God work well done and setbacks overcome’.

Service and Brotherhood
Camping at Sai Kung

The Fide Society organized a service camp in Pak Sha O, Sai Kung over the weekend on November 2-3. Over 20 students took part in the event. Together, we engaged in voluntary service, enjoyed two days of camping, and prayed.

On the first day, the students invited the chaplain, Fr. Joseph, to provide guidance to the participants. Fr. Joseph reminded us all about the meaning of service, emphasizing that we could offer small sacrifices and joys to God, pray for the souls in Purgatory, and learn to care for others. After some ice-breaking games and a prayer, the group proceeded to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel in Pak Sha O, Sai Kung. There, the students and teachers worked in teams to clean the chapel compound and mow the lawn area. We also had a lot of fun cooking dinner and preparing the camps for the night. After a day of hard work, we prayed the rosary in the chapel. As night fell, we were soon captivated by the splendid night view of the clear sky filled with constellations. It was not a problem at all to be disconnected from the internet when we were with friends. It was a memorable moment where all of us enjoyed the quietness of nature and the inner silence it offered.

On the next day, the participants visited the expositions inside the chapel to learn about the history of the century-old chapel in Hong Kong. We had some more fun before packing up and heading back to school. After a refreshing lunch at school, we had some time for sports. The whole event concluded with a Sunday Mass celebrated by the chaplain, Fr. Paul.

The service camp organized by the Fide Society was characterized by the joy of prayer, service, and brotherhood. We hope to see more meaningful events of this kind in the future.

of School Year 2024-25
On 2nd September 2024, with our National Flag Raising Ceremony, National Anthem, and our school hymn, we embarked on a new journey into the academic year of 2024-25 in our School Opening Ceremony. The hymn reminded us that "What the world needs today are generous men who will serve our society. Here the knowledge we gain with our gifts and skills will lead forward our mother country!"

Principal Law warmly welcomed all teachers and staff to the ceremony in our school auditorium. He outlined several exciting features of our school development, including expanded academic support, through our school's Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) Platform and English learning online software. He also noted a newly renovated school building and facilities.

Principal Law also spoke of plans to give a series of talks on various human virtues, plans to foster a stronger sense of belonging through the Holy Mass, and activities celebrating our school's 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary. He also touched on the plans to provide activities to fulfill students' talents and potential in a holistic way. Afterwards, our Vice-principal Kwan, and Assistant principal Ng revealed more details of our school's major concerns in academic and student character formation.

AWE Programme TSSS and DGS
Volleyball Teams in Tianjin

One of the projects on the 2024 AWE was a joint trip to Tianjin with Diocesan Girls School to play volleyball there with local schools. Our visit stirred interest and the following articles and videos appeared in the Tianjin local media.

Using the ball as a medium to draw "concentric circles" between Tianjin and Hong Kong

"We, the young generation in Hong Kong, must uphold the spirit of the Chinese women's volleyball team, hone our skills, cultivate feelings for our country and homeland, actively participate in the construction of the motherland, and jointly realize the 'Chinese Dream' of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation." Yeung Chu Yi, a student of DGS, excitedly told reporters.

From June 25th to 28th, the "Millions of Youths See the Motherland" Tianjin-Hong Kong youth volleyball exchange event was held in our city. Forty middle school students from Hong Kong Tak Sun Secondary School and Diocesan Girls' College, including Yeung Chu Yi, came to Tianjin to study, conduct sports and cultural exchanges, and experience the achievements of the motherland's development and construction and the charm of China's excellent traditional culture.

"Come on 'Tak Sun!" "Come on 'DGS!" "Good shot!"... During their stay in Tianjin, students from the exchange group worked with members of Yao Wah Middle School, TEDA No. 1 Middle School, Municipal Volleyball Sports Management Center, and Municipal Sports School They had a communication game. Serving, passing, spiking, blocking... on the field, the Tianjin and Hong Kong students went all out and sweated like rain; off the field, the cheerleaders cheered and were full of passion.

As a student of Hong Kong Tak Sun Secondary School who has practiced volleyball for less than a year, Chen Pak-an, a student of Tak Sun, just finished the men's competition. He admitted that his skills are not good, but he likes volleyball very much. "I like to practice volleyball. Every time I catch, pass and spike the ball, I enjoyed it, it sharpened my will, and I benefited a lot from this exchange, which broadened my horizons and improved my skills.”

Class of 2024 Speech Day
2024年度畢業典禮

On 31st of May, our Class of 2024 enjoyed a gladdening celebration as they graduated from Tak Sun Secondary School.

The heartfelt Keynote Address from our Guest of Honor, Professor HAU Cheuk Man, Barrister-at-Law gave our F6 graduates
a myriad of insights to ponder as they were about to embark on their next chapter. Words of wisdom and support from our
supervisor, Dr. Herbert, and our Principal Law reminded our graduates to cherish their families and friends.

Our valedictorian, Mr. Roy CHEUNG from 6M, reflected fondly on memorable moments from the past years and expressed
gratitude to teachers, parents and peers. His thoughtful speech brought both laughter and tears. Our school choir performed
“Star of Wonder” as the lyrics and music evoke the wonder of a shining star in the heavens and the perspective of a shepherd
watching from a distant hill, wishing our graduates every success in their future.

Then, our School Chaplain, Father Paul, gave all of us blessings and prayed with us to be a committed channel of peace for
our Lord Jesus Christ. As a special token of appreciation, our F6 graduates presented bouquets of carnation to their parents
for their unconditional and unwavering love all these years.

We are confident that these prayers and memorable moments will stay with our Tak Sun boys as they take their first steps
into the future. We wish all of them the very best in their aspirations ahead!

The Holy Mass Celebrating our School’s 24th Anniversary cum the Feast Day of Blessed Bishop Don Alvaro
With words of encouragement and reminiscence, Father Paul, our school chaplain, encouraged us to be persevering while seeking lasting happiness in his homily as our predecessors blazed the path in founding this school in its early years. When Blessed Bishop Don Alvaro visited Hong Kong in 1987, he suggested founding Tak Sun Secondary School. His humility and cheerfulness were radiant and contagious in bringing souls closer to God.

The whole school, teachers and students alike, gathered together to celebrate devoutly the Holy Mass in our school hall on 10th May, 2024. We gave thanks to all the blessings our Lord Jesus Christ has endowed on us in the past decades and may He bless us and our families in the years to come!

F4 Service Learning Program 2023-24
中四社會服務學習計劃 2023-24
All of our F4 students took part in a service learning program in January and February. The program was co-organized by the Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA).

One of the goals of the program was to cultivate students’ positive values such as empathy and care for others.

In addition, the program was intended to train students’ skills in communication, cooperation, and activity planning. They need to go through different stages of services, including choosing a suitable service target, drafting and revising their service plans, and implementing the plans.

Through the different stages, they were able to learn to communicate and cooperate with others.

These are valuable learning experiences because the skills are difficult to learn in daily formal lessons.

Get-together

On the 9th of March 2024, our Fathers' Get-together brought together around 30 concerned fathers to address the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the education of their sons. Principal Law and Mr. Eric Tang, our IT Department Head, provided valuable insights and updates on the challenges that AI poses to the educational landscape.

During the gathering, participating fathers actively voiced their opinions, underscoring the importance of empowering the next generation with ethical values, guidance, and positive role models. As fathers, they acknowledged their vital role in guiding and nurturing the youth, equipping them to navigate the complexities of a world with conflicting values and moral relativism.

Over coffee and snacks, the Fathers' Get-together fostered an environment of support and camaraderie. In the wake of this gathering, we have conducted a survey which shows that all participating fathers find the event satisfactory or very satisfactory. We sincerely hope that this event will continue to serve as a platform for fathers to come together, share their experiences, and contribute to the holistic development of our children.

By engaging the whole body and mind, students learn about not only the basic elements of drama, but also the textual features of a script, the creativity of juxtaposing sound effects with dialogue and the integration of technology with the performance.

The ceremony recognized talents and efforts in various inter-school and intra-school competitions plus academic achievements over the past year. As usual, prizes were given out for excellence in sports like fencing, handball, as well as cultural events like the speech festival. Of course, outstanding academic results were also rewarded.

In addition, our school also presented the most outstanding service awards to those students with remarkable service records and a big heart.

We must highlight our overall champion basketball, handball and table tennis teams. Their hard-earned victories against tough competitions won our school the top trophies in HKSSF Shatin-Sai Kung District. Thunderous applause and cheers filled the hall as the teams went on stage. Their incredible team spirit, perseverance through trainings, and commitment to the sport were truly admirable. Credits also go to their coaches and PE teachers.

At the end of the event, our Principal, Mr Dennis Law, congratulated all winners and participants. He reminded that success took hard work, resilience, discipline and collaboration. He emphasized that a self-disciplined lifestyle was particularly salient in the upcoming summer vacation.

Afterwards, Father Paul, our school chaplain, gave all of us a blessing to mark the end of this school year.

The Feast Day of
Our Lady of the Church

With roses, prayers and hymns, we offer to Our Lady our deepest affection and devotion, especially in this Marian month of May. We have expressed our profound trust in Our Lady as well as our immense gratitude for her maternal care and protection of us and our families. As our Lord Jesus Christ has entrusted us to her as our Mother, we gaze upon Our Lady with loving devotion.

This morning, right before our Class Tutor Period, we gather on the Ground Floor, outside the lift lobby as we do every year with FIDES boys and our school’s Chaplaincy members. Teachers and students’ parents have prepared and offered roses of different sizes and colours to honour Our Lady. Her humility, her purity, her prudence, her obedience, her patience, her faithfulness, her devotion...and all her virtues continue to shape our character.

Omnes Cum Petro ad Jesum per Mariam,

All with Peter to Jesus through Mary!

English Language Studio
and Drama Lessons

In order to build up an English-speaking campus, our students and English teachers enjoy English speaking time in our school's Language Studio.

During lessons, we use English drama games and drama projects to enliven our learning time when students speak up and act out. This is a result from our English teachers’ collaboration with the NET Support Team from the Education Bureau.

During lunch time, our students are still lingering in our Language Studio to chit chat with their peers and English teachers. They also participate in board games and card games like Chess, Uno and Monopoly Deal. With this relaxed setting, students enjoy spontaneous social interactions. In addition, there are English books and magazines for them to enjoy leisure reading.

Summer Serenade unites people
and communities with music
Summer Serenade, our school’s annual concert, has brought together not only students, and their parents, but also musicians of different schools to celebrate music and talents in the auditorium of Tak Sun Secondary School. With the pandemic receding, our school has resumed organizing this musical event this year.

The annual concert was held in the evening of 12th May. It showcased an impressive variety of musical pieces and performers, ranging from choir singers to wind band and string ensemble. The event commenced with a captivating performance by a Violin and Guitar Duet, followed by our School Boys Choir, our School Treble Choir, and our School Wind Band. The cArts Wind Orchestra also delivered a stunning performance, featuring “Animation Songs Medley,” “Cinema Paradiso,” and “How Does a Moment Last Forever.” As the night progresses, the energy builds, and the crowd becomes more and more engaged.

During the intermission, we enjoyed a video refreshment with a String Quartet playing “Beauty and the Beast.” performed by our school’s musician students. Then, the Joint School Senior Mixed-voice Choir, SALEM Immanuel Lutheran College and a Double Bass Solo by Mr. Lo Ka Hei Joshua celebrated with music and passion in various pieces.

One of the most noteworthy features is that Mr. Bosco CHU, our music department’s panel head, composed "Laudate Exultate"( Praise and Rejoice) and dedicated it to the 20th anniversary of Tak Sun Secondary School. Its four-part mixed version was performed for the joint-school choir in the concert, leading the entire audience to praise the Lord with all creatures of heavens and earth.

Our School Boys Choir continued with “Blue Tail Fly,” “Farewell,” and “Roll Mighty River,” followed by Our Lady’s College Choir with “Coming Home.” The Mass Choir concluded the concert with a beautiful rendition of “Memories.” At this moment, the whole concert is brought to the climax that transcends boundaries, bringing everyone together in a shared experience of joy and unity.

Summer Serenade is a reminder of the power of music to bring people together and lift their spirits. The fantastic atmosphere of our school's annual concert is an experience that is to be anticipated again next summer.

International
Boys Education
The Hong Kong members of the International Boys School Coalition met yesterday at St Paul’s College with Mr. Tom Batty from UK, Executive Director of IBSC.
The meeting was hosted by Mr. Dennis Yuen, the Principal.

The IBSC groups together some of the best boys schools in the world from USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand but also from Africa and South East Asia.
Apart from St Paul’s College and Tak Sun, other schools present were DBS, Ying Wa College, Hong Kong Wah Yan, Kowloon Wah Yan, St Joseph’s College and
La Salle College.

Mr. Batty spoke about the characteristic of boys’ learning and education, being different from girls. Boys need more time to learn and mature. They need a diverse and
varied school experience so they can find something in which they can excel: study, sports, music and arts, etc. Once they have achieved this, they can begin to excel in
other areas. By being good at something, they can feel not only competent but also valued and begin to contribute to the community. This philosophy matches the
educational approach of Tak Sun well.

Mr. Batty explained that boys sometimes behave in a stupid way but when they do, they need to come up against “soft hands” of the teachers. The soft hands do not hurt
the boys but they are firm and do not move. The message is “You have made a mistake which will not hurt you but the school authority is firm and is not going to change.”

He encouraged schools to attend the 2023 IBSC conference in Auckland, New Zealand at Westlake Boys High School and the 2024 conference at Harrow School, London.

The Hong Kong members of the IBSC look forward to inviting other local boys schools to join their association and hope to have a regional conference looking at the
challenges facing Hong Kong boys in education.

Catholic Leadership Camp

The joint-school Catholic leadership camp has been an annual event since 2021. This year, Tak Sun partnered with 6 other schools (Good Hope, Choi Hung Catholic Secondary School, Hong Kong Wah Yan, Kowloon Wah Yan, Tak Oi and St. Clare’s) in organizing this event.

The camp lasted three days in and took place in Wah Yan College (Kowloon) and Good Hope School. It was a great honour to have the Catholic Bishop of Hong Kong, Bishop Stephen Chow come to celebrate Holy Mass on the last day.

The theme of the leadership camp was HOY (Hope and Joy). Hoy is a Spanish word which means ‘Today’ and the camp brought the message of hope and joy in the Catholic faith to the student representatives of the seven schools.

Seven catholic leaders from Tak Sun joined this leadership camp, two of them came from the 2021 leadership camp as helpers.

Through varies activities: team-building challenges, workshops, group discussion, exchange of school experiences, self-reflection, Taizé prayer and Holy Mass each day, the participants benefitted plentifully. Many participants commented that they had reflected more on their relationship with God and become more confident carrying out evangelization activities at school. The bonding of friendship among the co-organizing schools will be a great asset to the student representatives in their future journey as Catholic leaders.

In the Holy Mass Bishop Stephen Chow, celebrating and reflecting on the Feast of the Transfiguration, gave the students words of encouragement and blessing.

Just as the Apostles were prepared by the glorious Transfiguration of Christ, all of us are also strengthened by the presence of Christ in this leadership camp, so that when difficulties and challenges come we will always remain faithfully united to Christ and never lose hope.
