Congratulations to Mr. Tony Lau on his achievements

Mr. Tony Lau, our English Subject Stream Master, is an awardee of the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence 2009/2010 in the English Language Education Key Learning Area.

We would like to congratulate Mr. Lau and all the English teachers on their outstanding achievements. Simply put, Mr. Lau, with the generosity and support offered by the school administration, has been trying his utmost to bring about a real EMI school at Tak Sun. For details regarding Mr. Lau's philosophy and reflections pertaining to English Language Education KLA, please click here.

Mr. Lau, who has been with us for 6 years, has brought about earth-shattering changes at Tak Sun. First, you cannot hear one Cantonese word in the English Subject Stream at all times, and this is unique among all EMI schools in Hong Kong . Second, language is for communication. At Tak Sun, we have the EMC (English as the Medium of Communication) policy. English teachers only use English to communicate with their students inside and outside school to help create an English-rich environment for our kids and to minimise their learner anxiety. Third, we have rolled out the Extended EMC policy. English teachers only use English to communicate with other teachers inside school to help create a more English-rich environment. Fourth, the English Society activities, an extension of the English curriculum, take place every week (Mondays to Wednesdays) to motivate students to enjoy using English outside the classroom. Fifth, learning English means understanding and appreciating English-speaking cultures, and for this reason we have the English Week every year. In December 2009, we had the Sports Week in which the English teachers and the non-English teachers had a soccer match watched by over 700 students with English commentary. This activity has actually prepared our junior form students for the HKDSE Elective Modules ¡V Learning English through Popular Culture and Learning English through Sports Communication . Sixth, there are many Native English-speaking Teachers (NETs) in the English Subject Stream and they work closely and happily with the Local English Teachers (LETs). Last but not least, given the fact that we aim at being a real EMI school, school meetings, announcements and assemblies are conducted all in English.

Once again, we would like to congratulate Mr. Lau on his achievements in the realm of ELT and we would continue to create an even more vibrant and student-friendly English-learning environment at Tak Sun Secondary School .
