AWE School Trip to Spain and Portugal

"Exploring Faith and Culture in Spain and Portugal" is one of the well-received AWE programmes every year. This programme brought students to the northern regions of Spain and Portugal. There was a strong cultural atmosphere providing students with a lot of great fun. Students lived in the homes of host families throughout their sojourn in Spain, having plenty of precious opportunities to interact with the students at Colegio Montecastelo, our brother school in Vigo, Spain. In addition to visits to historic places in Santiago de Compostela and Vigo (in Spain) as well as Braga and Porto (in Portugal). The whole group left Hong Kong on 25th January and will come back on 4th February. The photos are taken in Portugal. Some 17 students from Colegio Montecastelo joined us in the trip. All the students had a wonderful and unforgettable experience in the whole trip.

Shum Shui Po Cross-Country Competition

The Cross Country Team participated in the Shum Shui Po Cross-Country Competition on 8th January 2012 at Shing Mun Reservoir. They got a very encouraging result: 3W YUEN Cheuk Bun got the 6th place in the Boys Group D Section; 1T CHAN Christopher Chi Lai, 1T NG Ho Yin and 2J LAU Sze Tsun got the 6th, 8th and 10th places in the Boys Group E Section. They all received individual prizes. Congratulations!

HKSSF Tennis Championships
The School's Tennis Team won over Hong Kong Fanling Lutheran Secondary School by 2:1 and qualified into the Quarter Final. Unfortunately, we lost to Lam Tai Fai College by 1:2 with some crucial points in the double match. This is a very good experience for our School Teams members. Well Done!

Champions of IVE Career Training Programme

Three students, 5J WAN King Chun Alan, 5J KWAN Warren and 5M CHOW Tsz Ching Calvin have won 1st prize in the Career Training Programme organized by the HKIVE (Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education). The event was organized for Sha Tin District by the Business Administration Department of IVE (Shatin) with more than 20 schools participating. The contest was held last December (2011) during their Term 1 Examination and they attended the prize giving ceremony last Saturday (7th January 2012) morning. Their prize is consisted of HK$3,000 cash as well as a ticket for seminars worth HK$2,000. Congratulations to Alan, Warren and Calvin for all the hard work they put into their project.

Sweden Lundaspelen Handball Aged Group Handball Tournament

4M LAU Cheuk Yin, Matthew has participated in the Sweden Lundaspelen Handball Aged Group Handball Tournament as a member of the China Hong Kong Squad during Christmas break. There are a total of 50 teams from 6 nations including Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Hong Kong. The China Hong Kong Team got 17th finally! Congratulations, Matthew!

A camera team from TVB came to the school on 6th December to film our Putonghua education and interview our Principal in Putonghua to encourage Hong Kong students to study the national language. The clip will be shown on Christmas Eve, 24th December, at 11:00 pm (TVB Jade, 翡翠台 及 高清翡翠台) as part of a programme on National Education (國民教育沙田區委員會呈獻:我們的驕傲).

JA Company Programme Trade Fair

The Cuisine@HK, a JA Company from Tak Sun Secondary School formed by a group of S4 and S5 students, just finished their showcase at the Kwai Tsing Theatre on 17th December. The students did have very good experiences in forming a mini-corporation and running a company in this JA Company Programme, which provided them opportunities in learning real business, teamwork, and leadership skills. Before the showcase, they cooperated with Tai Oi Secondary School and set up pre-sale booth between both schools.

Wonderful achievements in the English Speech Festival

Our students often do well in the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival. This year, we have got two champions, one runner-up and one 2nd runner-up in the 63rd Hong Kong Schools English Speech Festival.

Wong Nok Yin, Zelda of 7A (first left), won the championship in the Solo Verse Speaking, Non-Open Secondary 6 & 7 - Boys with a score of 86 marks.

Yong Vi Jian, Ian of 1T (second left), won the championship in the Solo Verse Speaking, Non-Open Secondary 1 - Boys with a score of 86 marks.

Wong Ting Yin, Angus of 7B (second right), won the runner-up in the Solo Prose Speaking, Non-Open Secondary 6 & 7 - Boys with a score of 84 marks.

Chung Chor Chun, Oscar of 2M (first right), won the 2nd runner-up in the Solo Verse Speaking, Non-Open Secondary 2 - Boys with a score of 85 marks.

Besides congratulating these students on their achievements, we would also like to extend our heart-felt gratitude to the above students' parents and teachers for the unfailing advice, training and encouragement they have given to our students.

Applied Learning on show

Our first batch of graduates who studied the Applied Learning course, "Film and Video Studies" at the Vocational Technical College (VTC) had their graduation show on 10th December at the VTC Tseung Kwan O campus. We believed that this course did provide them hand-on experiences as well as academic knowledge for their future needs, especially in the Film Industry. We hope that they will have good results in the coming HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education).

Wong Tsz-sang brings renown to Hong Kong with his creative project

WONG Tsz Sang (Form 7 Graduate of Class of 2007) recently won a grand award in the tertiary student project category of The Asia Pacific Information and Communications Technology Awards (APICTA) for his undergraduate honours project “Ulcer Detection in Gastrointestinal Videos”. With such achievements, he has been interviewed by different media. After he graduated in the Hong Kong Baptist University, thanks to his talent, Tsz Sang is now studying in the Chinese University of Hong Kong to further pursue his studies in Computer Science. TSSS got the 2nd runner-up in the HKSSF Grade A Handball Championships

Our Grade A Handball Team got the 2nd runner-up this year. We unluckily lost to the PLK CW Chu College by one point (11:12) in the Semi-Final. However, our students did not lose their faith and finally won over CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School by a large margin (24:10). Well done, Tak Sun boys!

Our teacher, Mr. Clement Ng, recently helped Oxfam, Hong Kong in preparing their teaching aids for teachers regarding Global citizenship. Mr. Ng made use of his Geography lessons with elements in Other Learning Experiences to let students understand more about the concept of global citizenship. His sharing is now available in a recent publication by Oxfam. We hope that it can benefit our next generation.

Clarence LAI got the Bronze medal in the All China University Fencing Championships

LAI Clarence Ka Tsun (Form 7 Graduate of Class of 2010) won the Bronze medal in Men’s Epee (Grade C Team) in the 17th All China University Fencing Championship held in Guangzhou. Clarence is now rank number 8 in Hong Kong and 2 in Hong Kong Youth. Apart from good academic results, he keeps continue his favourite sports and perform well on behalf of Hong Kong. Caritas Bazaar

The Fide Society and the Student Association supported the Shatin Caritas Bazaar on 20th November. About 100 student helpers and teachers worked for the booth arranged by our School. They did organize it well and demonstrated the virtue of caring. Finally, they helped the Caritas to raise more than $30,000.

Tak Sun Partnerships and Projects with HKU and CUHK
Tak Sun has renewed its “Professional Partnership School” contract with the University of Hong Kong for three more years. This will involve sending teachers from Tak Sun to monitor English teaching in other schools and allowing HKU education majors in initial training to come to Tak Sun for their Teaching Practicum.

Tak Sun has also agreed to take part in two medical research projects of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Prince of Wales Hospital. The first, under Professor Alice Pik Shan Kong will study obesity in teenagers, while the second, led by Professor Yun-Kwok Wing will look at patterns of sleep deprivation and sleep compensation in students.

International Boys' School Coalition (IBSC) Meeting

Our Principal, Dr. Herbert represented Tak Sun at the Asia Regional Conference of the IBSC at St. Paul’s College, Hong Kong on 21st October 2011. Many famous boys’ schools in the Asia/Pacific Region also attended, including La Salle College, Diocesan Boys’ School, Kowloon Wah Yan College and Hong Kong Wah Yan College. Two of the best schools in Singapore, Raffles Institution and St. Joseph’s Institution were also present. Other schools in the group include the Doon School (India) and St Mary's International School (Tokyo). The Executive Director of IBSC, Mr. Brad Adams and the Vice-President of IBAC, Dr. John Kennard of St. Paul’s College led the Conference and each member shared their experiences in teaching boys. Tak Sun Vice-Principal Mr. Ronald Hui, an old boy of St Paul's College, accompanied Dr Herbert.

Community Charity Day 2011

The Day was an educational activity that provided an opportunity for our students to learn the virtues of caring and generosity by supporting the Dress Special Day organized by the Hong Kong Community Chest and the Raffle ticket sales organized by the Hong Kong Caritas. Also, in order to enhance students' house identity, an inter-house fund-raising competition was held. Approximately $40,000 was raised by the students, teachers and staff.

World Water Monitoring Day 2011

More than 80 boys participated in the World Water Monitoring Day 2011 on 18th September, organized by the Water Supplies Department at the Ma On Shan Water Treatment Works. The Department also launched the Water Conservation Competition in the ceremony. The Secretary for Development, Mrs. Carrie LAM, GBS, JP officiated the Competition. Kirin Cheung, our rowing elite

CHEUNG King Lun Kirin of 5M represented China Hong Kong and participated in the Asia Cup 1 Rowing Championship 2011 held in Singapore from 2nd to 5th June 2011. Since 2008, Kirin has been selected as the Hong Kong Youth Rowing Team member. Also, he was awarded as one of the most potential athletes by the Hong Kong Sports Institute. In 2011, he was further received scholarships given by the Institute. His performance was highly appreciated by the Hong Kong China Rowing Association. Well done, Kirin!

This summer 8 Tak Sun students were selected to represent Hong Kong in the 2011台灣鐵砧盃手球錦標賽 Taiwan Tien Jian Cup Handball Tournament between Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan held in Da Jia Township, Taichung County. The U19 team (中國香港19歲以下代表隊)was Champion in Consolation Bracket (落選賽) and U16(中國香港16歲以下代表隊)came in 5th place. The players were:

Visit of the Rockbrook International from Ireland

The 5th Overall Champion for HKSSF Handball

Our C Grade Handball team got the 1st runner up in the HKSSF Shatin & Sai Kung Area Handball Competition by only losing at 9:11 to CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School in the Final. However, our A Grade and B Grade Handball Teams got the Champion and the 1st runner up in this area and hence, we are the best performed Handball Team in the HKSSF Shatin & Sai Kung Area this year. We won the HKSSF Handball Overall Champion for 5 years since 2006! Well done! Tak Sun boys!

International Exchange with Redfield College, Australia

Three of our students, Yeung Him Felix of 4W, Kwan Warren of 4J and Leung Kai-hang, Joshua of 3P returned from their student exchange at our sister school, Redfield College, Sydney. Redfield provided homestay for our students, who were made very welcome by their Australian classmates. They were able to enhance their English speaking skills, enjoy life in an Australian family and share in their love of sports, including horse riding.

Europe Aged Group Handball Tournament 2011

Two of our Tak Sun boys, CHEUNG Chi Wing, Tommy of 5W and CHEUNG Shun Kan Kelvin of 4M have been selected by the Handball Association of Hong Kong, China. They have represented Hong Kong Handball Junior Squad Team (Boys) participated in the Europe Aged Group Handball Tournament 2011 in Germany and Czech Republic from 20th April to 1st May. They put a lot of effort on this Tournament and spent 3 nights every week for training in the last four months. The Hong Kong Team finally arrived at 33th place out of 69 teams in Final.

The Principal, teachers and students of Forms 2 and 3 traveled to Guangzhou for an exchange with our sister school. After exchanging greetings and gifts with the school authorities there, the Tak Sun students attended the morning classes of Year 10 and 11 and were able to observe the excellent motivation, good discipline and active participation of the mainland students in classes of up to 55 students. This was an extremely valuable learning experience for us all. In October, students from Guangzhou will do a similar exchange in Tak Sun.

Tak Sun won the HKSSF Table Tennis Championships

Our Grade B Table-Tennis Team got the championship this year. They defeated Jockey Club Ti-I College by 3:2 in the Final. Our Grade C Team also did a good job. They got the 1st runner-up this year by only losing 1:3 to S.K.H. Lam Kau Mow Secondary School in the Final. Our Grade A Team qualified into the knock-out stage also, but losing to Ti-I College in the first round. It is believed they have prepared themselves well for greater achievements in the future. Tak Sun: A HKU Faculty of Education Professional Partnership School

Tak Sun is one of 14 Professional Partnership Schools which work closely with HKU. Each year HKU chooses one secondary school as venue for sharing among partnership schools. This year, Tak Sun was chosen as an exemplary secondary school where students have abundant opportunities to use English outside the classroom.

Professor Stephen Andrews, the Dean of the Faculty of Education of HKU and Dr Tammy Kwan, the Assistant Dean together with 22 education professionals, including 3 secondary school principals visited Tak Sun Secondary on 13 April 2011 to witness how the English Department teachers have worked together to create an English-rich campus.

The workshop lasted from 11:00 am till 3:00 pm and visitors experienced the whole-campus Lunch Broadcast, the Language Studio activities and the Board Game Extravaganza at the Student Activity Centre. All the visitors were truly impressed by the student-friendly activities where students experience and enjoy English learning outside the classroom from Monday to Thursday every week. These activities empower our next generation to excel in a globalized world.

Hong Kong District Handball Team Training Competition 2010-2011
CHEUNG Shu Sum, Samuel of 2P represented Yiu Tsim Mong District Handball Team and got 3rd runner-up among all district teams in Hong Kong. Moreover, 7 students from Form 1 to Form 3 also represented Shatin District Handball Team and they got 6th place finally. It is a good experience for them to make a team with other handball lovers.

As invited by the Education Bureau, our English Subject Stream Master, Mr. Tony Lau, a winner of the Chief Executive Teaching Excellence Award in English KLA, conducted an English demonstration lesson on 14th March 2011 to showcase his excellent teaching strategies. Apart from being video-taped by the Education Bureau for online sharing, Tony conducted an English lesson viewed by more than 30 participants from different secondary schools, a new record of attendance in Hong Kong. HKSSF Grade B Handball Championships

Our Grade B Handball Team got the 1st runner-up this year. It is obvious that the YMCA College had studied our team well. They got a big lead of 11:2 and everyone believed that we would lose undoubtedly. However, after the half time, our team played another defense tactics and we focused on defense. At the last minute, the result was 11:12 and we still got chances. Although we could not make it and lost by 11:13 finally, our team did learn a lesson, which was much important than getting the Champion. Well done, Tak Sun boys!

AWE School Trip to Spain

"Exploring Faith and Culture in Spain" is one of the well-received AWE programmes every year. This programme brought students to the region of Andalusia in southern Spain. There was a strong cultural atmosphere providing students with a lot of great fun. Students lived in the homes of host families throughout their sojourn in Spain, having plenty of precious opportunities to interact with the students at Colegio Tabladilla, our brother school in Seville. In addition to visits to historic places in Seville, they also enjoyed day trips to Cordoba, Jerez, and the natural reserve park of Coto de Doñana. The whole group left Hong Kong on 22nd January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip. AWE School Trip to Kenya (Africa)

"Exploring Kenya" is one of the new AWE programmes this year. Twenty students and two teachers (Mr. Man and Mr. Van Grondelle) engaged on a ten day “adventure” through southern Kenya. It turned out to be a meaningful and enjoyable experience. We visited national parks, beach resorts, enjoyed local cuisine, and bargained in cities, towns, and “villages”. But, the single richest experience was visiting three local secondary schools. After the initial shock of walking onto campuses of people that looked and spoke in a completely different way, we played sports, had conversations, shared cultures, and finally, felt comfortable, relaxed, understanding, and the type of true respect that only comes with experience. The whole group left Hong Kong on 21st January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip.

“Rome: Centre of Civilization & Faith” is one of the well-received AWE programmes every year. This programme provided students with a better understanding of Catholicism and its history and art in the world’s two famous cities: Rome and Paris. The participants were requested to do a study on the religious art, history and architecture found in these two cities. They selected relevant churches and basilicas and other related structures and came up with a brief report on history, art and faith in Rome and Paris. The whole group left Hong Kong on 21st January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip.

"The Three Gorges: Project, Culture & Scenery" is one of the new AWE programmes this year. This programme aimed at leading our students to know the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River from different perspectives – from Liu Bei borrowing Jingzhou to the building of the Yellow Crane Tower, from the Xinhai Revolution to the provisional government, from the Three Gorges Project to the Express Rail Link – to appreciate the surrounding scenery and to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the Three Gorges Project so as to reflect on the opportunities and impacts brought about by the recent developments in China. Our students had the opportunity to contact and communicate with the students and residents there, and got to know modern China from the first person's point of view. The whole group left Hong Kong on 25th January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip.

Through site visits to ancient capital of Xi'an to explore the Qin, Han and Tang dynasties, exposure to the ancient civilizations of their own and neighboring communities, and an understanding of this period of ancient history and culture of the contemporary world and the continuing impact on today's Chinese people's lives, students would have a better understanding of the changes and inheritance of ancient Chinese civilization and modern culture. They also participated in the AWE Inauguration Ceremony and some briefing sessions of these programmes. "Survival Tips for New English Teachers" published in HKFEW

Mr Tony Lau, our English Subject Stream Master as well as an awardee of the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence in English Language Education KLA in 2010, has been invited by the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers to write an article on survival tips for new English teachers. Tony's article, entitled "Survival Tips for New English Teachers" has just been published in the newspaper (Issue no. 23) of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers. In this thought-provoking article, Tony shares his experience and offers many good pieces of advice to new English teachers regarding how they can become reflexive and lifelong professionals in ELT. Simply put, Tony's article is not only inspiring for new English teachers, but also enlightening for ELT professionals in the territory. Visit of the Karanji Secondary School Wind Band, Singapore

A group of Singaporean School Band visited TSSS on 4th December. The Karanji Secondary School Wind band is composed of 82 students and six teachers, who paid a visit to TSSS from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. They did some music interflow with our boys at the School Hall. After that we had some refreshments and the students from both parties can communicate with one another. This is a good chance for our students to broaden their horizon through the international language – music.

French International School Victor U14 (C-grade) Segalen Invitational Basketball Tournament

The C-grade Basketball Team participated in the U14 Victor Segalen Invitational Basketball Tournament hosted by French International School (FIS) on 3rd and 4th December 2010, facing some of the best international schools in the territory including Hong Kong International School (HKIS) and Canadian International School (CNDIS). We beat FIS 51-1 on the first day, but lost the games to CNDIS 12-20 and to HKIS 19-28 on the second day, only one match shy to final. Our boys have learnt a lot from the matches and we will definitely get stronger. Very well done, boys!

A Worthy Champion in the Speech Festival 2010

Yong Vi Jun Sean of 2T won the Championship in Solo Verse Speaking – Non-Open Secondary 2 – Boys in the Speech Festival. He got 89 out of 100 marks. The Adjudicator, Mrs. Marie Dixon, gave him the good comments as follows: "Excellent Strength & Variety in tone/Expressions you have such good use of Inflections/Pauses, Expressions. Well done. A performance." Being raised in an English-speaking family and educated at Tak Sun, a school with a rich English environment, Sean has always been a high achiever in English. In spite of that, he has not got complacent about his English abilities. Under the meticulous and patient guidance of his dedicated English teachers, Sean kept having serious and constant practice before the Speech Festival until he got totally absorbed in the verses. As a result, his performance was able to stand head and shoulders above the other contestants.

The Hong Kong Schools Handball Squad got the first runner-up in the Asian Schools Handball Champion 2010 in Macau. Hong Kong defeated Thailand, India and Macau, Iran got the Championship. Visit to Pharmacy, Queen Mary Hospital and HKU

A group of Secondary 6 students visited the Pharmacy of the Queen Mary Hospital, co-organized with our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). They made use of this golden opportunity to explore more regarding their careers. After the visit, they have attended a seminar given by Prof. TW Ng, Acting Department Head of Mathematics, HKU. Our C Grade Handball Team got the Champion in the HKSSF Handball (Shatin & Sai Kung Area) at a score 14:10 in the Final match to Chinese YMCA College. This is the fourth time for our C Grade boys to get the Championship in the last ten years, which was a record in this area! Congratulations to Tak Sun!

The 1st Teenagers Handball Invitational Tournament

CHEUNG Chi Wing, Tommy of 4W, WONG Jason Yip Lun of 4J and CHEUNG Shun Kan Kelvin of 3P represented Hong Kong and went to Singapore to participate in the 1st Singapore Teenagers Handball Invitation Tournament (第一屆新加坡青少年手球邀請賽) out of 16 players (aged under 16) from 24th to 28th January. Hong Kong got the 1st Runner-up in the Tournament. Congratulations to Hong Kong and Tak Sun Boys!

All HK Schools Jing Ying Handball Tournament

This is the first time for our School to enter the All Hong Kong Schools Jing Ying Handball Tournament. It is a great opportunity for our boys to learn from other schools. We entered the quarter-final at the end with a score at 12:13 loss to Ning Po No.2 College, only one step to get a trophy. However, it is a valuable experience for us to learn. Well done, boys!

JA Company Programme Trade Fair

The Fluor-Man, a JA Company from Tak Sun Secondary School formed by a group of S4 and S6 students, received a merit award on the Best Product / Service Category in the “Company Programme Trade Fair” held on 19th December 2009. The JA Company Programme has been and continues to be the most popular Junior Achievement program, instilling in young people all over the world real business, teamwork, and leadership skills. Under the guidance of volunteer business advisers, students form a mini-corporation and operate a company as much as they would in the real world in about 18 weeks.

Christmas Party

It is an annual event coordinated by the Student Association. The Party this year was held on 18th December 2009. It consisted of three parts, namely, a drama show celebrating Christmas, a Christmas variety show and an individual class Christmas celebration. Not only did the students enjoy the food and presents, but also had a better understanding of the meaning of the Christmas – the birth of Jesus Christ.

Joint School Staff Development Day

The International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) has organized its first Regional Conference in Hong Kong. As a member school of the IBSC, we coordinate with Diocesan Boys’ School and St. Paul’s College in organizing workshops for their staff members in the theme of “Teaching Boys”. A famous educational consultant, Dr. Abigail Norfleet James was invited from the United States, to conduct those workshops. With her expertise is developmental and educational psychology as applied to the gendered classroom, every teacher got more insight in organizing a better class for the boys.

ZESPRI Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards

LO Chun Ming, Alex of 4T got the Outstanding Junior Athlete Award for the Second Quarter, 2009. The award presentation was held on 15th September to recognize the achievement of outstanding local junior athletes under the age of 19. There are only 5 recipients among all Hong Kong athletes and Alex is one of them. He first represented Hong Kong in 2008 at the 2nd World Junior Wushu Championships and his remarkable performance in men's 24 forms taijiquan event (Group B) earned him a gold medal. Well Done!
